MSc Professional Practice: Lifestyle Management in Sport

Together with the University of Gloucestershire, we have launched the first ever postgraduate degree dedicated to Lifestyle Management in Sport.

Exclusively in conjunction with the University of Gloucestershire, this course focuses on the growing demand for qualified and accredited individuals to help top-level athletes and high-performance sport staff (including coaches, administrators and officials) manage their lifestyle and wellbeing. This innovative programme of learning and development will equip practitioners with the skills and knowledge to support real-life workplace scenarios such as career transition, finding positive mental health, introducing financial wellbeing, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. The course is designed primarily for practitioners already working in the field without the appropriate skills or experiences, and also for those leaving undergraduate study who are keen to pursue a career in the welfare and lifestyle roles across sport in environments including education, talent development and high performance.

The course has been developed by the University of Gloucestershire over the last two years in collaboration with the Switch the Play Foundation. Both organisations have liaised with The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) to work towards mapping this degree to the Professional Standards that are currently being developed by CIMSPA. This process is ongoing and in conjunction with industry experts and practitioners from lifestyle and welfare roles in athlete and player development environments. Together, our aspiration is to create a programme of study that recognises and supports the increased demand for this vital role across the industry in response to the spotlight on such matters triggered by the Duty of Care review. As an existing CIMSPA Higher Education partner, the University of Gloucestershire is committed to ensuring this degree programme receives industry validation once the professional standards have been approved, and complements the existing suite of degree programmes which were validated earlier this year.

Through this collaboration, we are committed to ensure that individuals who complete the course become eligible for accredited membership of CIMSPA at an appropriate level, once the professional standards have been confirmed and published. This accreditation will provide learners with an edge to enter or progress through an increasingly popular and competitive jobs market place, and give them the best chance of developing a successful, rewarding and sustainable career in this area.
